Friday’s accident involving three trains – Coromandel Express, SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a Good train – had killed 288 passengers and injured 900 others, till the time of filing this story.
The Congress on Sunday demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, saying the Odisha train tragedy was a “man-made” catastrophe caused by “utter negligence, serious system lapses, incompetence, a narrow sense of ‘know it all'”. The reason happened. The Modi government coupled with high decibel PR has “exposed the hollowness at every level of the railway administration”.
“All stations on the Indian Railways have one upline and one downline, with two loops located for slow trains based on their traffic density. The station at Balasore had one up mainline and one down mainline. Similarly, one loop line each was located next to the upline and downline,” said Lalit Chandra Trivedi, retired general manager of East Central Railway and railway expert.
In this case, the Coromandel Express was the up train, while the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express was the down train.
If a goods train is running ahead of an express train, the latter is given priority by taking the good train on the loop line.
“The mainline point of the Coromandel Express was at the station, the loop line was already occupied by a freight train. Under normal circumstances the passenger train would have passed through the upline. However, near the station it too was shifted to the loop line,” said Trivedi.
The express train derailed after colliding with a waiting goods train, resulting in some of its coaches being dislodged and breaching the mainline.

“The SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express coming downline or in the opposite direction rammed into the coaches of the Coromandel Express lying on the tracks at high speed. The resulting triple accident is one of the rarest examples in rail transport,” said Trivedi.
Trivedi said prima facie the accident occurred due to signaling failure, which first resulted in the collision of the Coromandel Express with the goods train, followed by the collision of the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express with coaches lying on the tracks.
275 people have been killed and over 1000 injured after three train accidents in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday night.
Seventeen coaches of two passenger trains were derailed in Odisha when Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, Coromandel Express and a goods train collided at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district.
Earlier today, Railway Board member Jaya Verma Sinha, citing a preliminary inquiry, said there was some problem with the signaling and only the Coromandel Express met with the accident at Balasore.
“As per preliminary findings, there has been some problem with the signalling. We are still waiting for the detailed report from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Only the Coromandel Express met with the accident. The train was running at a speed of about 128 km/h. H,” Jaya Verma Sinha said.
“The derailed bogies of the Coromandel Express came on the downline and collided with the last two bogies of Yesvantpur Express, which was passing through the downline at a speed of 126 kmph,” he said.
“Such an accident cannot happen unless someone interferes with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guidelines with criminal intent or in a criminal manner,” he said.
He said that after reading the data logger, also known as the event recorder, the exact cause of the accident would be identified.
Like the black box of an aircraft, this device is installed in the signaling room of every locomotive and railway station. While the data recorder in the locomotive registered several parameters during its running, the one at the station recorded the signaling parameters.
