“The mainline point of the Coromandel Express was at the station, the loop line was already occupied by a freight train. Under normal circumstances the passenger train would have passed through the upline. However, near the station it too was shifted to the loop line,” said Trivedi.

The express train derailed after colliding with a waiting goods train, resulting in some of its coaches being dislodged and breaching the mainline.

“The SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express coming downline or in the opposite direction rammed into the coaches of the Coromandel Express lying on the tracks at high speed. The resulting triple accident is one of the rarest examples in rail transport,” said Trivedi.

Signal Failure

Trivedi said prima facie the accident occurred due to signaling failure, which first resulted in the collision of the Coromandel Express with the goods train, followed by the collision of the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express with coaches lying on the tracks.

“The derailed bogies of the Coromandel Express came on the downline and collided with the last two bogies of Yesvantpur Express, which was passing through the downline at a speed of 126 kmph,” he said.

“Such an accident cannot happen unless someone interferes with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guidelines with criminal intent or in a criminal manner,” he said.
